I’m starting this list off with my favourite country in the world. There are so many amazing towns and cities across Portugal and, whilst some places are more expensive than others, absolutely everywhere is affordable!
Lisbon and The Algarve are very popular spots that remain relatively inexpensive, but the Portuguese ‘Silver Coast’ has some equally beautiful towns and beaches for a fraction of the price. ‘Nazare’, the surfer’s town with some of the biggest waves in the world, ‘Foz do Arelho’, a massive beach with cool restaurants or Sao Martinho do Porto, a true all rounder with great water activities and ice cream.
2. Albania
Albania has become a social media hot-spot over the past year or so. Despite this, it is still such a beautiful place with so much cultural history whilst being one of the cheapest countries in Europe.
Travellers can explore charming coastal towns like Saranda and Himalayan, known for their laid-back atmosphere and affordable accommodation. The country’s cuisine, influenced by both Mediterranean and Balkan flavours, is both delicious and budget-friendly, featuring local specialities like fresh seafood and hearty stews.
Inland, Albania revels a wealth of historical and natural treasures. The ancient cities of Berat and Gijrokaster, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, offer a glimpse into Albania’s rich history with their well-preserved Ottoman architecture and cobblestone streets. Hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains or exploring the ancient Alhambra Palace in Granada are ideal affordable yet highly rewarding experinces.
4. Poland
You may think of Poland as more of a winter destination – but it really comes into it’s own in summer! Cities like Krakow, Warsaw and Gdańsk are rich in history, culture and charm, yet remain affordable compared to many other European capitals.
The country’s cuisine is hearty and delicious, feauturing pierogi (dumplings), kielbasa (sausage), and hearty soups like barszcz (beetroot soup). These can all be found incredibly easily at great local restaurants.
Hiking in the Tatar Mountains to relaxing by the lakes of Mazury is easy when public transport is so efficient and inexpensive, making navigating between cities and regions simple.
